The best part about this haunt is it follows the main theme. You walk through each part of this old house.
My favorite part of the set is the pipes room in the basement. It was creepy, and I ran out of there. I like that you can see down the haunt and into other parts before you arrive. This did build anticipation. They use old looking props that set the mood.
There is not a ceiling in most of the haunt and does take away from it being realistic. The actors do not do very much. One did a great job and shot me with an air gun. It was pretty scary. It had me on the ground and scrambling to get up. They miss out on a lot of opportunities to scare you. My built up anticipation was not taken advantage of. I would have freaked out if someone would have crawled out from under the bed. They also need to have a role and know how to time their scares.
There are some cool effects but not enough for me. Some parts are to bland and are missing something. With more work this could be a much better haunt. I was not very scared and would not make it back to this haunt this year.
Makes you jump, good set
Needs more scares and actors
This is my favorite Hauntplex haunt for the simple reason that it starts with the theme of an old mansion and it sticks with it throughout. I think my favorite effects are all the sliding doors and panels and the long "glass" hallway. I felt like I had sneaked into an abandoned mansion and got more than I bargained for! I never knew where someone would jump out of next. I really like the attention to detail in each of the rooms, from the kitchen and dining room, to the study and even the bathroom.
The acting was average, but will probably pick up as the season goes along. There was a good balance of light: enough to see some detail, but not enough to give away too many secrets. The 13th Street Manor seemed to be the longest Hauntplex haunt...just about perfect length.
Although warehouse and mall haunts are not my personal favorites, I really enjoyed this haunt for its atmosphere and for the couple of really heartfelt screams it pulled from me. Hauntplex has deals for attending multiple haunts, which is a good way to go if you want to see all three. If you have to pick just one, pick 13th Street Manor.
Consistent theme, decent sets, sliding doors
Average acting
I liked how this haunt made me feel as if I really was in a house, despite the fact that the haunt is in a warehouse setting. Each room kept with a consistent theme of an old mansion. Actors were plentiful, one for each room, but were not the most enthusiastic. It had its moments of suspense, but kept it interesting by creating a few rooms that were meant to disorient and confuse, much like a puzzle. Animatronics were few, but the ones that stand out are great - like the electrocution man - loud and very realistic. Props and F/X were detailed and fun, i.e. trick paintings and crawlspaces, lowering ceilings.
Good use of props, plenty of actors, detailed
Not original, no really dark areas
Do you remember what it was like playing in a dark basement as a kid? That uneasy feeling of not really knowing if you're safe.after all there could be a ghost living down there.
At the 13th Street Manor you will be reunited with that feeling, but you trudge on through the old house knowing full well there really are ghosts in there. This is one of my favorite haunts as it sticks to its theme and leaves the house-in-the-haunt. I truly felt scared as I walked through feeling like I was intruding in an old abandoned haunted house. It is truly a classical ghost story that comes to life before your eyes.
The props and set are outstanding, and the length of the path through the house is perfect. With several more enthusiastic monsters or, even better, ghosts this would be an exceptional haunt.
Nonetheless, I had a blast at the 13th Street Manor.
Ghost-infested sofa bed, lots of surprises, great theme
Not enough actors, lacking enthusiasm, missed opportunities
This haunt did a good job of keeping with the theme overall. From the very first room this haunt has lots of great surprises and tricks up their sleeve. I liked that we had to open some of the doors ourselves to get to the next room. There were many times that we got into a room and it seemed we were trapped in there, adding to our fear. There was always an interesting way to get out, but it left us wondering for a minute if we were stuck.
The sliding doors and hidden exits gave this haunt an authentic feel. It truly felt like a old creepy house with hidden passageways in it. I liked the plexiglass panels that allowed us to see into the hallway a bit, but were forced to take a turn into yet another creepy room. There were enough rooms in this one to give it enough length that it felt like we were prowling around a large, old house.
I really liked the room with the tv and couch in it...great creativity there! That was an unexpected scare that I really enjoyed. The areas that had the small spaces that you had to slither through were awesome! The house lacked some of the details I would have liked to make it more authentic, but it was still done very well.
The actors did a great job, and stayed in character well. A few more actors would have been a bonus though. Overall, this is a haunt to see this year.
Great theme, good set design
Lacked details, needs more actors
I enjoyed 13th Street Manor for its solid execution around a classic theme. The haunted manor is built within a large warehouse-like space, but the sets are very thorough and authentic so it never dawned on me that I wasn't in a haunted mansion. 13th Street features puzzle-like rooms and passageways with an interactive set of actors that weren't afraid to taunt and tease our group. The chef in the kitchen had me running around the island trying to avoid his giant knife! The creepy crawly critters were a nice touch to the atmosphere of moving walls, running water, a meat locker of dead bodies that kind of had me gagging and some great claustrophobia-inducing areas.
Great set & atmosphere, good acting, utilized element of surprise
Some might consider the haunted manor theme overdone
13th Street Manor takes the expression "haunted house" very literally, building around the classic theme of a creepy, old house. The rooms are perfect, with lots of fun elements that change up the scares frequently enough to keep visitors on their toes.
My favorite spot was a room where we had to exit through a hole in the drywall and navigate a passage that was literally between the walls. Brilliant!
The design kept me disoriented, but was crafted well enough to keep me from accidentally wandering backstage. I loved the kitchen, the bathroom, and the overall creativity of the sets.
Acting could have been improved to maximize the scare factor, but overall, this is still a great haunt.
Great theme, great sets
Acting could improve
This is my favorite haunt of the three at Hauntplex. I think it's because I really dig the theme throughout this haunt. It starts out looking like an old house that you have to walk into, and this house theme continues throughout. The first room has a fireplace, a coat rack, and some other house stuff. You're standing here for a minute looking for a way out, and when it's finally revealed, it's a great effect.
Some other house furniture is used to create the horror mood. The bloody bunk beds were also a nice touch. One effect that I distinctly remember is the floor that kind of shocked you. I don't even know what it was really, but the sound of it was like you were getting shot or something - that was scary because you didn't know where it was coming from, who it was coming from, or how long it would last. Not being able to forsee these kinds of things bumps up the scare for me.
Other great effects included the random air blowing at you, the sideways walls, and the rooms that all look the same with seemingly no exit. I also really liked the plexiglass walls...it's neat to see the other rooms through them, but doesn't give too much away. The walls that looked like someone had run through them was also something that I haven't seen before and really liked this idea...especially when you have to walk through this outline.
Acting was pretty good, except that monsters don't wear glasses! That reduces the overall affect of the haunt. However, I really enjoyed this haunt despite the glasses.
Great theme, excellent length-to-scariness, overall really good
Monsters with glasses
I love the idea of this haunt. The entry feels like a run-down hotel lobby, and the elevator (while not particularly convincing) provides a fun setup for the rest of the haunt.
The 13th Door is at its best in the spots where it focuses on authentic design, such as in the various bedrooms, washroom, bathroom, and more. In these rooms, there were plenty of things to keep my eyes busy, causing me to let down my guard just in time for a good scare.
This haunt also made good use of sounds, with creepy voices ranging from whispers to shrieks that added a fun element to this haunt.
As there weren't many actors in this haunt, most of the scares depended on the sets, which would have been great had they not been augmented with a surplus of neon paint and curtains. As authentic as some rooms were, others were equally uninspiring. I've been in haunts where it felt like the hallways are on fire, and this isn't achieved by painting neon orange, green, and blue flames on black walls.
Though a few aspects could have been maximized with a little more energy and creativity, this is still a good place to have a fun time.
Fun theme, some good rooms, great opening
Few actors, lots of dead space in hallways
Walking down the hallway to the door we had to walk through, the one with the big "13" on it, was pretty creepy. I really liked the fact that they made us open the door ourselves. Interaction where I, as a visitor, must actually physically participate is always a plus.
This haunt was very dark, literally. There wasn't much light so I had trouble at times seeing where I was going and what was in front of me. This can be good and bad, but either way helped in the overall feel of the haunt as being scary. There weren't enough actors. There were many times where a good actor could have provided and intensified a scare, but this just didn't happen as much as I would have liked it to. For instance, the slanted room with the vertical lines in it and the couch would have been perfect for a scare. I was disappointed when nothing happened.
This haunt used a lot of curtains. Again, having to physically do something in a haunt such as pulling over a curtain so you can walk through the room gets me involved in the haunt, and I totally like that.
However, one might say that this haunt had way too many curtains. A few strategically placed would have been great. But it started getting to the point that these curtains just became a nuisance.
Length was really good in relation to the haunt as a whole. Overall, not bad.
Dark atmosphere, length
Not enough actors, some overused props
