This haunt has some of the best corn I’ve ever seen. It’s tall and thick and deeply reminiscent of every horror flick with a “running through the corn” scene. As we walked into the haunt, I could almost feel the corn folding in behind me. What’s strange is this haunt doesn’t start in the corn. It starts locked in a bathroom with a dead guy and a timer counting down. I really wanted to be scared by this, but for some reason the roomy bathroom and familiar TV scene (and knowledge of the huge line outside) kept me from thinking that I would truly ever be locked into the room. And it’s for that reason the scare in the room worked so well. For those who don’t like impending doom the room works, and for hardened, arrogant souls like myself, they’ve got something planned too.
After bursting from the room though, the creativity falters and fails. While it wasn’t all corn maze, the other rooms didn’t pack the punch of the first. And to be honest, a lot of it is corn maze. At points I felt more like I was on a midnight nature hike than inside a haunt. Of course there were lots of characters popping in and out of the corn, some who made a real concerted effort to double back and go for two or three scares. Unfortunately for them, the corn wasn’t scary, it was tedious. I found our group get tired of the endless walking and start talking. We picked up the pace and ran into another group. It seemed we couldn’t win until we were dumped into the parking lot feeling it was both too short and too long.
Strong start
Endless walking through corn
I'm not much for corn mazes, but put some scary characters and a few good scenes along the way and I'm entertained for while. Haunted Field of Screams is good fun and, judging by the massive line, a lot of people agree.
I was worried that the lights from the nearby ballpark would ruin the effects, but I shouldn't have worried because the corn had to be 14 feet high and I felt very small and alone out there! The first room presented us with a great challenge: find the key to unlock the door before the timer ran out and we were "locked in forever." Very cool.
The rest of the walk consisted of actors lurking in the cornstalks and jumping out at us. There were also about a dozen or so small scenes or rooms along the way that we had to pass through. I think my favorite was the little "cabin" where Mike Meyers hurtled himself through the window...nice!
I always get a little tired and bored of walking through the corn near the end, but the kids that were there (and there were LOTS of them) didn't seem to have an issue with that. The groups kept getting bunched up, but, considering how late we were there and how many people they still had to get through, that's bound to happen. Overall, a fun way to spend your Saturday night...especially if you're in the pre-teen/young teen age group.
PROS:
CONS:
Corn was massive, lots of scenes along the way
Scares get repetitive, too long for me
I actually deducted a point off of the length for being too long. The reason being is that while you’re walking through endless miles of corn you really get tired of the same masked actors jumping out at you every hundred feet. There are really only 5 “rooms” in the entire length of this haunt, and while they do capitalize on these mini scenes while you go through, I think it would be a better overall haunt if they shorten the walk through the corn and add more of these scenarios. Although, it is fun to run up ahead and hide in the corn yourself and scare your friends, which apparently against the rules, but I had to entertain myself! The best part of this haunt is the opening sequence. You’re put in a room with a locked door and a timer. Strobes, a dead body (is it an actor or a dummy?) and lots of blood make this the most creative entrance to a haunt. The other scenes in this haunt include a great play on the tiresome clown theme, but they pull it off with less color and more strobes – which are hand controlled by the actors. The school bus walkthrough is also a pretty creepy experience with a dozen or more mannequins, strobe lights and fog.
Creative scenes
Waaaaaaaaay too long
Alright, before anyone fetches a rope to hang me with for my score on the length; let it be said that I cannot score it higher, not without lying to myself and everyone else. That said, let’s get on with it.
The night was perfect for an outdoor romp. A clear night sky with starlight and tall glorious corn, waving in the breeze. I mean, really, this is some astounding corn. I can say this is one of the best props at this haunt.
The first place we end up is locked in a room and the timer is running; have to get the key and get out fast! This was a good scene, which created lots of suspense.
Then there was lots of corn. We walked and walked and walked until… Rargh! Someone jumped out and said ‘BOO!’ Then, we walked and walked more. One of us said, “Wow, this really is some amazing corn!” Then, yep, someone else jumps out… Rargh! BOO! Then throw in a few sheds with decent props, costumes and actors and you get the picture. Some of the cornstalk performers have figured out that “Rargh” after the fifteenth time is not so scary. The performers who make bizarre noises and understated chuffing and snickers in your ear are WAY creepier and get a much better reaction from me.
I think my issue with the length of this maze has less to do with distance and more to do with what they put into it. Also, it was too easy to catch up to the group ahead; we were frequently just standing still waiting for them to move on, and then got caught up to by the group behind us. Perhaps some more eerie lights and sound effects through the long stretches in the corn would amp it up.
Really great corn. A few great actors and scenes
Too little scare for all that great corn
This haunt is in a cornfield and has a maze feel to it. Although we
were not going through an actual corn maze, we were walking through
trails in some of the highest corn I have seen in a while. There is
not a general theme to this haunt that I could tell; it is a variety
of different scares set up in a cornfield. Make sure you wear sturdy
shoes because this haunt is pretty long.
This attraction has several rooms to go through and the first is by
far the best and my favorite. The creativity in this room is great
and the fact that we had to participate in order to get out is a nice
touch. Once out of the room, we wound our way through the corn and
were met by all types of monsters and creepy things.
There were a couple of areas I liked in particular, the school bus,
and the room that proves challenging to get out of because it’s so dark.
There were quite a few actors although a few more would have filled
in the places that had nothing going on. Most of the actors were
decent, but I mainly heard a lot of “Grrrr’s” and three actors
completely broke character. I would have enjoyed more than the
typical “Boo” in here, although there were a couple of actors that
made some very freaky noises in the corn that gave me goose bumps.
There was not enough distance between the groups going in and our
group caught up to the group in front of us several times. When we
stopped to let them get ahead, another group caught up to us. That is
always frustrating because the scare points get ruined as there is no
time to set up for the next group.
Overall this haunt is good if you’re looking to take a walk in the
corn with moderate scares.
Some rooms very good, tall corn, some weird noises
Too much lag time, catching up to other groups
This one was probably my least favorite of all the haunts so far. Which is not to say it didn’t have some good scares, because it did. I just think it was to long for it's own good and there weren’t enough actors.
The room in the beginning was ingenious. I love how that made me feel like I was in the movie, but I’ll leave you up to find out which one it was. The set design in this room was really good. I wish I could see that caliber of realism in more haunts to come or maybe even a series of rooms like that. But after the big build up of the first room I wasn’t too impressed.
Some of the actors didn’t put their hearts into it and others came out of character. Some were well hidden, but then just laid there and did nothing. I think that the haunt could have used some better scares. Other then that I think if they shortened it up a little and added more props and actors my experience would have been better!
The first room was friggin' sweet
Just not enough actors and the haunt was too long
The best part about this haunt is the beginning. I love how this haunt actually
made you interact and not just blindly walk through. I have to give a hand to the
actor in that "Saw" room...I've never seen anyone stay as still as he was and it was freaky! I was totally not expecting him to move, I thought he was a dummy, but when he did get up, I about crapped my pants.
One other actor totally freaked me out too. We were waiting to enter a shack-like
building, and I was just looking at the corn, checking it out, and I realized I was
looking straight at a monster and didn't realize it. When I realized that there was
someone or something there, I about died! While these two actors stood out, most of the other actors in this haunt could use a little work, which I think in turn would raise the scare factor. I must say that the actors had great masks though!
This is such a popular haunt, there is always a huge line. I realize that they have
to get everyone through the haunt, but the groups were just sent too close together to get the full effect of the haunt.
I love the tall corn...it's scary in and of itself, it just needs a little more action and some other effects. Also, this haunt could be considered on the long side...but not too bad. Overall, a really good haunt!
The Saw room rocked!
Needs a little more spunk
There are two nighttime attractions at Field of Screams this year. One is a haunted maze that I did not go through and the other is The Haunted Field of Screams. It has a cool opening room to set the tone, a lot of corn and some scenes throughout laid along a wandering path of corn complete with random ghouls jumping out and scaring you.
The corn is incredibly tall and at the beginning it’s quiet rustling was enough to get my skin on edge. Scares along my journey included some black hallways, clowns, a bus, a classroom, a house taken over by creepy masked men and a lot of people screaming.
While I really like corn maze haunts because they have a unique eerie quality, great olfactory appeal and a lot of ambience I felt this year’s Haunted Field of Screams was way too long and had a lot of repetition. In general I felt like I was just walking through endless paths hoping for a different scare than the guy screaming as he jumped out of the corn. My group also ran into the group ahead of us and had the group behind us catch up. Despite our best efforts to slow down and wait we ended up spending the last quarter to third of the experience with about 12 people total.
I also felt that the acting wasn’t so much acting in most places as it was screaming with masks on. There weren’t really costumes for most characters. Seeing the logo on your hooded sweatshirt isn’t really scary. And I understand its hard to control crowds while you’re acting, but coming out of character and literally saying “hold on dude, that group is slow” takes me out of the moment.
Corn is gorgeous, first room sets bar high
Doesn’t live up to the first room!
