This haunted house was a lot of fun. The set was very dark and creepy. The set did not have very much detail but was effective. Being dark helped with the scare factor but took away from the set.
There were great characters in this haunt. There was a lot of anticipation and there were parts where I did fear what was behind me. The dark halls were really good. Get ready for every scary killer from the best scary movies to come after you here. Some rooms did nothing and there could have been more actors.
I do not remember any animatronics. This is an example of a haunt that did not have to use any. The actors did a good enough job. I like more actor-generated props. The air compressors can be very annoying and takes away from the experience. I like when they are scary enough to make me run out of a haunt.
This one got all of us. We left Ken in the dust! I would probably go back to this haunt.
Very scary, good actors
Needs to be longer and have more detailed set
Even though I'm not a huge fan of horror films (especially the slasher-type), I was really looking forward to this haunt. I might not enjoy those films, but the idea of actually being stalked by a madman, or crazy with a (insert deadly farm tool here) really got my adrenaline pumping. I thought a few of the characters, Jason in particular, did a great job by staying in character throughout. He also seemed to appear everywhere in this haunt. The long hallways with cell doors were unsettling because I didn't know if or when one of them would fly open and I'd be met with yet another madman.
The Hannibal scene looked good and the lighting was really well done. Most of the haunt was way too dark for my tastes. I'm not afraid of the dark (in haunts, anyway)...I just find it to be annoying. The idea of driving to a haunt and paying good money just to wander through black hallways seems a little ridiculous to me. Now, add a well-timed strobe or flashes of light intermittently lighting up Leatherface, for example, as he slowly approaches...now THAT would scare me!
I felt like the length was a bit on the short side, and I didn't feel like I experienced very many different movie scenes. I think the haunt has good potential, since the theme was consistent: classic killers from the movies. And, maybe it's a reference that's lost on me...what IS the curse of Slaughterhouse Gulch, anyway?
Theme concept, hall with cell doors
Too dark, not many actors, too short
The Curse of Slaughterhouse Gulch was another strip mall haunt - this one had a theme of bringing together all the serial killers from all the classic horror movies. This one is really dark to walk through, mostly because their set design and props were minimalistic and it seemed they were trying to hide that from you. However, I like when haunts are dark, it adds to the suspense.
There were lots of curtains in this one that we had to walk through - which can get annoying. They didn't have too many actors, and the ones they had were not into it. I think one even apologized to me while walking by.
Characters we encountered include Freddy, Michael Myers, Hannibal, Jason, Samara, etc. It had its moments of tension, and was still a decent haunt all in all.
Dark
Short, poor set design
Lots of good and genuine scares await at Slaughterhouse Gulch. As I have said before, everyone is naturally afraid of something and when your greatest fear is concealed in the darkness, it makes it much more real. Because much of the haunt is pitch black, what would have been only a startle becomes a real freak-out experience.
Never knowing what is around the corner the length of the haunt probably seems longer than it really is. Not to mention I felt anxious much of the time I toured through the haunt. The staff could have made this the scariest haunted house I have ever been to if they would have had a better presence in their scares.
I gave the scare factor a 10 but this is mostly because of the dark atmosphere as opposed to the actors or the props and set.
Uses darkness to invoke a natural fear
Cheap set
This is a new one this year, and they are off to a good start. The theme is horror movie bad guys, and it's a great idea.
This haunt starts off with a great scare, and keeps the hauntgoer guessing all the way through. There were many dark places, and some so dark we couldn't see in front of our faces. It seemed that they were short on actors, but the ones that were there did their jobs well.
I would have liked to see the rooms more authentic to the movie characters themselves to give it more realism. There were also numerous places where actors could hide and definitely get us good, but they weren't utilized, and that was disappointing.
There are several areas that were done very well, and I was hesitant to walk through them, and to me that makes a haunt great!
This haunt is off to a great start, and if they raise the bar a couple notches with set details, and add to the length a bit, they could easily become one of my favorites.
Overall theme/rooms, actors
Too many curtains/plastic sheeting, lacked enough detail
It is very dark inside this playground of horror film superstars, and that alone makes it very creepy. It was nearly impossible to see right in front of us when walking the passageways of this haunt and it kept me on edge throughout. You never knew if someone was lurking around the next corner, because you couldn't even really tell if there was a corner!
If you're a horror flick fan, you'll enjoy guessing what monster will present themselves at the next turn. Each actor has a set that is representative of the movie they are from. I thought a few of the sets were pretty cool, particularly Lechter's Lair and a famous Motel, but I don't want to give away too much. There were some cool new movies and some great classic ones featured.
In my mind the actors were 50/50. About half of them were really excellent, totally in character and definitely creepy. The other half seemed to give up on trying to scare us after their initial "boo!" Overall, this Haunt wasn't very innovative, but I thought the theme was cool and in the end I totally ran out screaming!
Darkness = scary, cohesive, well-executed theme
Actors inconsistent throughout
If you're looking for all of your favorite horror movie bad guys, this is where you'll find them. Some are better than others, but it makes for a fun guessing game as you enter each scene and try to figure out which movie is being represented.
The sets were just good enough to get the point across, and it was reasonably long. I felt like most of the actors did a good job of portraying their characters. After all, Michael Myers, Hannibal, and Samara are some big roles to fill.
This was a fun haunt and I enjoyed it.
Dark and creepy, lots of movie monsters
Average set design
This haunt consisted of scenes from different scary movies. While all were pretty good, there weren't really any that I was totally freaked by. The scenes from Hannibal I really liked however, but that was mostly due to the set. They had us walk down this hallway that looked like holding cells for inmates. That was cool. Another scene that scared me a little was the scene from The Ring. This however wasn't due to the acting in this scene, but just the sight of the well will always be freaky to me after seeing this movie. The only acting in this haunt that I would call above average was done by Jason. They used different Jason masks, and then one started walking toward us getting up in my space. He did a good job. I felt that the acting overall could use improvement. For instance, the scene from Saw could have been way scarier if the acting was more in-your-face. This haunt used a lot of curtains as well. Again, this was cool at first, but then just got to be a pain in the butt when we had to keep opening them up to walk through. Good length. Overall, this haunt wasn't bad, but I felt it could have been better.
Great ideas, length
Acting, curtains
